25.02.09 - ICTR/FUNDRAISING - UN STAFF RAISES MONEY FOR ARUSHA HOSPITAL

Arusha, 25 February, 2009 (FH) - The Arusha-based International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) staff have raised about Tanzanian shillings 3.5 million (about $3,500) in support of the regional referral Mount Meru Hospital, reports Hirondelle Agency.

The collection would also go to buy supplies for the maternity department and food for patients who can not afford to pay for it.

The amount was raised during an ICTR-DASS (Division of Administrative Support Services) carnival party held at one of the down town Pepe Restaurant and was attended by over 200 UN staff members.

Among in attendance included ICTR President, Justice Dennis Byron, and UN Court's Prosecutor, Justice Hassan Jallow, and some judges.

"This is a unique way of assisting our community where we are working and living...I am impressed that the proceeds will go for a very good cause," said Justice Byron at the function held over the weekend. He also thanked various donors for fabulous raffle prizes.

The Chief of DASS, Ms Sarah Kilemi, thanked the staff members for their generous support to ensure that the programme was a success. "This spirit is extremely encouraging and meets among UN objectives," she stated.

The occasion was also coloured by acrobatic performance, a blitz of different cultural dresses, fashion show and music.
