12.05.09 - RWANDA/GACACA - GACACA: EX- RWANDAN OFFICIAL IMPRISONED FOR 19 YEARS OVER GENOCIDE

Kigali, 12 May 2009 (FH) - A former administrative official in the Rwandan capital, Celestin Sezibera, was sentenced on Monday to 19 years in prison after being found guilty of participation in the 1994 genocide, reports Hirondelle Agency.

The 55-year-old convict was tried before the semi-traditional Gacaca Court of the Nyamirambo sector, a district in Kigali.

The bench concluded that the former adviser of the Nyamirambo sector had played a part in the elimination of two Tutsi families.

However, he was acquitted of the charges of planning the genocide and incitement to commit the genocide.

After the judgement, no party had indicated intention to appeal.

The former adviser of the Nyamirambo Sector has been detained at the Central Prison of Kigali (PCK) since December 1994.

Several former administrative officials in the Rwandan capital were sentenced for their involvement in the 1994 genocide.
