23.06.09 - RWANDA/GACACA - GACACA COURT ACQUITS WOMAN OF GIRL'S MURDER

Kigali, 23 June 2009 (FH) - A woman residing in Kigali, Rwandan capital, was acquitted Monday by a  semi-traditional Gacaca Court of the murder of a young Tutsi girl during the 1994 genocide.

Mrs Safina Mukandoli, in her 50s, was accused of having or had killed Zania Uwamohoro, who was then seven years old.

"There is no evidence to prove responsibility of Mukandoli in the death of little Uwamahoro", declared the gacaca court from Nyakabanda, presided by Eugene Rugambwa.

During her trial, Mrs Mukandoli had admitted being with the young girl in April 1994, while fleeing the battle in Kigali.

According to Mukandoli, the victim died of diarrhea a few days after their departure from the capital.

Unsatisfied with the decision, Janviere Mukakabera, Uwamahoro's mother, has announced that she will appeal against the judgement.

Mukandoli's judgement seems to call into question that of her husband, Issa Gakwaya, sentenced last year to 17 years in prison for the same death of the young girl.
