18.09.09 - ICTR/GATETE - TRIAL OF FORMER RWANDAN DIRECTOR STARTS OCTOBER 19

Arusha, 18 September 2009 (FH) - The trial of Jean-Baptiste Gatete, former Rwandan senior government official accused of having played part in the 1994 genocide, will begin on 19 October, 2009 before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), headquartered in Arusha, Tanzania, it was learned on Friday.

The prosecutor will have until 13 November to present his case, according to the Chamber's schedule.

Gatete is prosecuted for genocide and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in the former prefectures of Kibungo (eastern Rwanda)  and Byumba (north-eastern Rwanda).

During the genocide, the defendant was a director at the ministry of Family and Women Affairs, then headed by Pauline Nyiramasuhuko, the only woman to have been the subject of proceedings before the ICTR.

Gatete, who has claimed his innocence was arrested on 11 September 2002 in Congo-Brazzaville and was transferred two days later to the Tribunal's seat.
