28.10.09 - ICTR/RWANDA - ICTR REACHES OUT TO RWANDAN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS

Arusha, October 28, 2009 (FH) - Secondary school students and teachers from the districts of Rulindo and Musanze in Northern Rwanda are attending since Tuesday an Outreach Workshop to learn about the contribution of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) to the national reconciliation process in Rwanda.

According to an ICTR press release, the three-day workshop in Musanze is sponsored by the European Commission.

During the opening ceremony, ICTR's spokesperson Roland Amoussouga highlighted that "the workshop was one of the true testimonies of the existing cooperation between Rwanda, the European Commission and the Tribunal".

In their speeches, the Mayors of Musanze and Rulindo Districts, Celestin Karabayinga and Justus Kangwaje, urged the students to be at the forefront in the fight against genocide and its ideology.

Since 2005, the Tribunal has conducted awareness-raising workshops in different secondary schools throughout the country. More than sixty Rwandan schools have so far benefited from these workshops.
