16.11.09 - ICTR/GATETE - PROSECUTION CONCLUDES ITS CASE AGAINST EX-RWANDAN DIRECTOR

Arusha, November 16, 2009 (FH) - The Prosecution Monday closed its case against the former Rwandan Director in the Ministry of Family and Women Affairs, Jean Baptist Gatete after fielding a total of 22 witnesses before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), reports Hirondelle Agency.

The defendant is facing charges of genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, incitement to commit genocide and crimes against humanity to which he pleaded not guilty. He is notably prosecuted for crimes allegedly committed in the former prefectures of Kibungo and Byumba, eastern and north-eastern Rwanda respectively.

ICTR Senior Trial Attorney, Richard Karegyesa told Hirondelle News Agency that the Chamber was working on the scheduling order for the next session.

Gatete was arrested on 11 September 2002 in Congo-Brazzaville and was immediatly transferred to the Tribunal.

The prosecution case started on October 20, 2009.
