13.01.10 - RWANDA/SURVIVORS - ARREST OF ALLEGED MURDERERS OF TWO GENOCIDE SURVIVORS

Kigali, January 13, 2010 (FH) - Rwandan police arrested on Monday five persons alleged to have murdered a married couple of genocide survivors in Byimana Sector (South) on January 8, Radio Rwanda reported.

Onesphore Ngendahimana and his wife Marie Claire Uwambayinzobe were killed by a grenade thrown into their house at night.

According to the partial confession of the suspects, the attack was aimed at preventing Ngendahimana and his wife from seeking prosecution of the killing of their relatives during the 1994 genocide.

A report released last week by Ibuka, the umbrella organization of genocide survivors, put the number of survivors killed in Rwanda in 2009 at 26.
