25.01.10 - RWANDA/FRANCE - TWO FRENCH JUDGES IN KIGALI TO COMPLETE THEIR INVESTIGATIONS

Arusha, January 25, 2010 (FH) - Two French judges from the Tribunal de Grande Instance (TGI) in Paris arrived in Rwanda on Friday 22 to investigate the case of captain Pascal Simbikangwa, in 1994 a top intelligence officer in the Rwandan army and now a genocide-suspect living in France.

According to the pro-governmental daily New Times,  Nicolas Aubertin and Brigitte Jolivet were scheduled to meet on Monday the head of Genocide Fugitives Tracking Unit in the office of the Prosecutor, John Bosco Mutangana.

This new week-long mission follows a similar visit to Rwanda made in November by two others judges from the TGI who were completing their investigations on two pending cases, those of Wenceslas Munyeshaka and Laurent Bucybaruta.

Fifteen Rwandans are currently awaiting trial in France.

In an op-Ed published January 7 in Le Monde, the French Foreign Affairs and Justice ministers stated their intention to create a special investigative unit as part of the TGI to speed up the prosecution of genocide crimes and crimes against humanity.
