01.03.10 - RWANDA/GENOCIDE - FORMER DIRECTOR OF PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE TO BE TRIED ON APPEAL FOR RAPE

Kigali, March 1st, 2010 (FH) - Augustin Mugemanyi, the former administrative and financial Director at the Rwandan Prosecutor's Office, will be tried on appeal, Saturday, before a Gacaca court in Kigali. He has to answer charges of rape and other sexual abuses during the 1994 genocide.

The upcoming hearing will be held in camera, according to the rules concerning rape cases. The names of the victims will not be disclosed.

At the end of his initial trial, on December 19, 2009, Augustin Mugemanyi was handed down a life sentence. He was found guilty of complicity in several murders - amongst them the murder of a well-known singer, Loti Bizimana -, of illegal confinement, as well as of rapes and sexual abuses in his Kigali neighborhood of Nyakabanda.

The defendant lodged an appeal.

The three main witnesses of the Prosecution are Mugemanyi's co-accused.
