01.07.10 - ICTR/KAREMERA - KAREMERA'S TRIAL ADJOURNS AS ONE OF THE ACCUSED DIES

Arusha, July 01, 2010 (FH) - Genocide-accused and former Secretary General of the Rwandan ruling party in 1994 Joseph Nzirorera, 59, passed away in Arusha on July 1st, following  sudden complications of a long  illness", according to an ICTR press release.

His defence was  at  the final stage of the presentation of its case, with his last witness, colonel Théoneste Bagosora, undergoing cross-examination.

Other accused in this trial are former President of MRND, Mathieu Ngirumpatse and Vice President, Edouard Karemera who had already concluded his defence case.   

The prosecution has indicted the three accused for their superior responsibility as top officials of the party then in power during the genocide.
