04.08.10 - RWANDA/UGANDA - GENOCIDE SUSPECT ARRESTED IN UGANDA

Kigali, August 4, 2010 (FH) - Augustin Nkundabazungu, a former employee in Murambi commune (former prefecture of Byumba), was arrested in Uganda at the beginning of the week for his alleged role in the 1994 genocide, Rwandan online publication Izuba Rirashe reported on Wednesday.

Nkundabazungu, 53, was Murambi's accountant. According to Rwanda Prosecution's spokesman Augustin Nkusi, "he participated to preparing the genocide, distributed weapons and took part in attacks against Tutsi who had sought refuge in Kiziguro church".

He acted in association with former mayor of Murambi Jean-Baptiste Gatete, currently on trial before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), Nkusi said.

Nkundabazungu is not on the ICTR list of remaining fugitives. Kigali hopes that he will be extradited to Rwanda "soon".

A Gacaca court has already sentenced him in absentia to a life term.
