The prisoners - both convicts and remand prisoners - are held in 13 penitentiaries for adult and one juvenile reeducation camp located in Nyagatare (East of Rwanda), Izuba rirashe quotes as saying the Commissioner General of Prisons, Mary Gahonzire.

127 minors are detained in the Juvenile reeducation centre while 302 children under the age of 5 live with their mothers in adults jails.

According to Radio Rwanda, prisoners have generated in 2010 an income of about 3 million US dollars, working as joiners, seamstresses, farmers or breeders.

Officials state that this money is used to meet prisoners needs.
