09.05.11 - RWANDA/GACACA - 97 REMAINING CASES TO BE JUDGED BY GACACA COURTS

Kigali, May 9, 2011 (FH) - Rwandan Gacaca courts which have been trying most of genocide-related cases still have to work through 97 cases before closing down according to figures from the National Service of Gacaca Jurisdictions (NSGJ).

Gacaca courts were closed in August 2010. However, grievances were submitted after the closure, 97 of them leading to these new trials.

It includes rehearing trials for people who came back to Rwanda after being sentenced in absentia.

Gacaca courts opened in 2005. They have tried around 1.5 million people.
