25.08.11 - ICTR/JUDGES - DANISH JUDGE ELECTED ICTR VICE-PRESIDENT

Arusha, August 25, 2011 (FH) - A judge from Denmark, Vagn Joensen, has been elected Vice-President of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).

According to ICTR press statement issued Thursday, the President of the Tribunal Judge Khalida Rachid Khan (Pakistan), on 24 August 2011, announced that the new Vice President would assume his duties effectively from August 26, 2011.

He replaces Judge Dennis Byron (St. Kitts and Nevis), who earlier this year was appointed President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).  Judge Joensen joined the Tribunal in May 1997 and among cases he is presiding over includes special deposition proceedings for the most wanted genocide fugitive, Felicien Kabuga.

Born in 1950, Judge Joensen holds a Master of Law and had been teaching constitutional, criminal and civil law at the Law Faculty of the University of Aarhus and of the University of Copenhagen.
