18.11.11 - WEEKLY PREVIEW - OCAMPO'S SUCCESSOR TO BE ELECTED NEXT WEEK

Arusha, November 18, 2011(FH) - While the successor of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC),  Luis Moreno Ocampo will be elected next Thursday, at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), special deposition hearing proceedings in the case of former Commander of the Rwandan Presidential Guard, Augustin Bizimungu will commence Monday.

Election of Ocampo's successor: Next Thursday, November 24, the successor of the Prosecutor of the ICC, Luis Moreno Ocampo will be selected. The would be elected candidate will have to be endorsed by the Assembly of States Parties in New York held between December 12 and 21, 2011. Four candidate are contesting for the post including, Fatou Bensouda of the Gambia, Andrew Cayley of the UK, Mohammed Othman of Tanzania and Robert Petit of Canada.

Katanga/Ngudjolo case: Parties in the case of two former Gongolese militiamen, Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo will state next week whether they call additional witnesses or not. The last witness to be heard was Ngudjolo who had already concluded his evidence.

Special deposition hearing in Bizimamana casae: The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda will commence conducting special deposition proceedings in the case of former Rwandan Defence Minister, Augustin Bizimana, on November 21, 2011, in order to preserve the prosecution's evidence for future use if he were to be arrested. The proceedings will be conducted in  total closed sessions before Judge Gberdao Gustave Kam, who has been assigned to handle the case. During the proceedings, Tanzanian lawyer Yitiha Simbeye, will defend the interests of Bizimana, who is charged with conspiracy to commit genocide, genocide or complicity in genocide, as alternative count, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
