28.11.11 - ICC/PROSECUTION - STATES CAN’T DECIDE BETWEEN TWO FRONT RUNNERS FOR PROSECUTOR’S POSITION

The Hague, November 28, 2011 (FH) - State Members of the International Criminal Court (ICC) haven’t found yet a consensus candidate for the election of the ICC’s next prosecutor, despite a deadline set for November 30.

They still have to choose between two remaining African candidates out of a short list of four names : Fatou Bensouda of the Gambia (currently ICC Deputy Prosecutor),  and Mohammed Othman, currently Chief Justice of Tanzania.

Fatou Bensouda was the great favorite for the position but different sources at the ICC told Hirondelle News Agency that Mohammed Othman did exceedingly well during the interviews.

States have until December 9 to reach an agreement. If no consensus is reached,  the ICC Assembly of States Parties will elect the new prosecutor from among the two when it convenes in New York from December 12 to 21, 2011. Moreno Ocampo's mandate expires on June 16, 2012.
