03.01.12 - ICTR/WITNESSES - ICTR HEARD OVER 3,200 WITNESSES

Arusha, January 03, 2012(FH) - Over 3,200 witnesses have testified so far before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) since genocide trials commenced in 1997, President  Judge Khalida Rachid Khan wrote in her last report.

She also stated that the witnesses hearings amounted to a total of  26,000 hours.

The Arusha based UN's Residual Mechanism is due to take over from the ICTR on July 1,  2012 and will be home for the Tribunal's abundant archives, which include 900,000 pages of transcripts, and audio and video recordings of more than 6,000 trial days. It will also accommodate more than 10,000 decisions and judgments.

Addressing the United Nations Security Council on December 7, 2011 on the progress of the ICTR completion strategy, Judge Khan promised that cases at first instance would be concluded by June, 2012 whereas those before the Appeals Court would complete by the end of 2014.
