Presentation of the closing briefs comes after the judges conducted a site visit in Ituri, the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), between January 16 and 20, 2012, to assess the witnesses’ testimony. They travelled to Bogoro, Aveba, Zumbe and Kambusto locations, visiting scenes of the alleged crimes and home villages of the two accused and the witnesses.
Katanga and Ngudjolo are accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes, notably for their alleged role in the attack of Bogoro on February 24, 2003 where over 200 people were killed.
Their trial opened on November 24, 2009. Katanga was arrested and transferred to The Hague on October 17, 2007, while Ngudjolo, was apprehended on February 6, 2008 and taken to the ICC custody a day later.
