Croatian wanted for war crimes arrested in Germany

A Croatian citizen wanted on a European arrest warrant for war crimes has been held in Germany, police said Friday.

The suspect is accused of participating in four murders during the breakup of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, according to a Frankfurt Police statement.

A decision will now be made on his extradition to Croatia.

Croatia's proclamation of independence from Yugoslavia sparked a 1991-1995 war with Belgrade-backed rebel Serbs who opposed the move.

The conflict claimed some 20,000 lives.
