Following the death in Senegal in 2021 of Hissène Habré - ruler of Chad from 1982 to 1990 - victims’ call for compensation has grown louder. The former president was found guilty o crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture by the Extraordinary African Chambers (EAC), a special court based in Dakar. As part of the government's commitment to transitional justice, Mahamat Idriss Déby, Chad's current president, has announced a Truth, Forgiveness, Reparation and Reconciliation Commission, along with a Commission of Inquiry into cases of disappearance. He also promises to compensate victims as quickly as possible, but funds are limited.
