Eight members of the Batwa ethnic group in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo were on February 4 given heavy sentences for “wicked destruction of nature” in a national park. The indigenous people are defending their right to access their “ancestral land” and the park authorities put the responsibility on the State. Is a criminal case a solution?
