Picture exhibition displays Gambian former dictator’s abuse

Two years after Gambia’s former dictator Yahya Jammeh left power and took asylum in Equatorial Guinea, British freelance photographers Jason Florio, Helen Jones Florio and American Katherine Taylor have compiled dozens of photographs documenting several categories of abuse under the former ruler. On March 7, the pictures were displayed at the first photo exhibition of the Centre for Victims of Human Rights Violations at their headquarters in Kololi, 25 minutes drive from capital Banjul.

The Victims Centre has been established by Gambian activists to coordinate and organize victims of the military dictatorship (1994-2016). The photo exhibition was held to help Gambians put faces to the names of people whose rights have been abused by Jammeh, Programme Officer at the Victims Center Ayesha Jammeh told JusticeInfo.Net.

Portraits to remember

The opening of the exhibition, titled "Portraits to remember", was attended by several prominent Gambians including Hassoum Ceesay, the curator and executive director of the National Centre for Arts and Culture and Baba Galleh Jallow, executive secretary of Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation Commission.
